Role of a DNA Profiling Test in Biological & Relationship Identification?
What is DNA Profiling?
It has been more than three decades since DNA fingerprinting technology was first introduced. Since then, it has been continuously used by the court and law enforcement agencies for various legal purposes. DNA fingerprinting is also called DNA profiling and is popular among the crowd.DNA profiling or fingerprinting is a test to identify the genetic makeup of an individual. It helps in the biological identification of an individual and also serves as the basis for relationship DNA testing.
Uses of DNA Profiling Test
- Relationship Identification
- Forensic Investigation
DNA profiling can help identify the suspects involved by studying the biological samples retrieved from the crime site. It helps the judicial system accurately convict or rule out a person from involvement in the crime.
A DNA Profiling Test can also accurately identify a dead body that is old or damaged.
In this process, the long-chain DNA molecules are cut into small, repeating base pair sequences, often 2-7 base pairs. These are called Short Tandem Repeats or STRs. These STRs then undergo an amplification process, which is called Polymerase Chain Reaction.
This generates the DNA profile of the tested individual. Similarly, in a relationship identification test, the DNA profiles of the involved parties are compared together to find resemblances. If 99.99% of the profiles are matched, the relationship is established. If it’s a 0% match, then the relationship is not established.
For DNA Profiling of an individual, most countries have a centralized DNA database. The Indian parliament has also passed the DNA Technology Regulation Bill in 2019, which will enable the law enforcement and the judiciary of India to accurately and quickly identify a convict or rule out an innocent person who has been wrongly convicted.
We have also done DNA profiling tests for law enforcement agencies. To learn more or book a DNA Profiling Test in India, contact us at the following numbers:
